Do-It-Yourself (DIY) - Anyone can lay natural stone or polygonal slabs themselves, it's really not "rocket science". Here you will learn step by step how to do it.
Do you have everything together?
In addition to the natural stone slabs, you will need a mortar tub, Nitrile work gloves, a mixing tool, a jointing trowel, a smoothing trowel, and a straightedge with a level.
With compacted concrete recycling, a gravel layer is used as a foundation, depending on the application this should have a height of about 15-20 cm.
We mix a bag of Quarzkies 25 kg with 500 g of resin. The mixture is stirred in a mortar bucket for about 3-4 minutes using a stirrer, so that all grains get a uniform shine. A "rolling" homogeneous mass is formed. For 1 m² (3 cm build-up height), approximately 60 kg of Quarzkies (3 bags of 25 kg each) and approximately 1.2 kg of resin (2 bottles of 1 kg each) are required.
Now, a level surface is pulled using a straightedge with a spirit level and a smoothing trowel. Roughly paint the back of the natural stone slabs with the resin. It is important to ensure that the outer edges of the slabs are not painted with resin. Then, the slabs are placed in the screed and brought to a uniform height by gently pressing them back and forth. It is important to leave space between the slabs, as they will need to be grouted later. If possible, do not undercut 1 cm joint width and depth.
After the screed has cured for 24 hours, the panels are coated with the impregnation. Do not apply too much impregnation, only enough to create a light film. After another 24 hours, the solution has completely penetrated. The impregnation is necessary to prevent resin stains from forming during the subsequent grouting.
After all the slabs have been laid and impregnated, the joint mortar (joint mortar) is now being prepared. We follow the same principle as with the substructure. The only difference is the mixing ratio. We mix one bag of Colorquarz 25 kg with 1 kg of resin. The mixture must now be carefully mixed in a mortar bucket using a stirring tool so that all grains have a uniform shine. A "rolling" homogeneous mass is formed. Mix one bottle of resin (1 liter/1 kg) with one bag of Colorquarz 25 kg. No calculations are necessary, this amount is sufficient for 4 m². With clean work, it takes about 15 minutes for 1 sqm. The mixture is then poured onto the slabs and pulled over the slabs using a smoothing trowel or rubber board, the material finds its way into the gaps (joints). At the same time, individual grains that are still on the slabs can be swept away with a small hand broom (hard bristles). After 24 hours, your terrace is walkable. Sweep away any remaining grains with a broom. FINISHED!
