This is how to install polygonal facade stones on XPS insulation.

  1. Attach XPS boardsFirst, you stick the XPS insulation boards onto the house wall. These serve as the base for the later application of the facade stones.

  2. Apply base coat: After that, apply a layer of filler to the XPS boards. This base layer must be wet when you proceed to the next step.

  3. Embed reinforcement mesh: Place the facade mesh on the damp putty. This mesh provides additional stability. Then, apply putty again to completely embed the mesh.

  4. Set anchorsBefore the filler mass is completely dry, at least 8 (instead of the usual 4) dowels must be installed per square meter. These ensure that the entire system is firmly connected to the facade.

  5. Let it dryLett the system dry thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.

  6. Attach stonesTo attach the facade stones, a fast-setting, multifunctional flexible adhesive (e.g. Sopro Silver Adhesive) is recommended. Apply this adhesive to both the facade and the back of the stones. The stones should then be pressed firmly. This adhesive ensures reliable and durable adhesion, especially with natural stones.

  7. Pay attention to weightFor stones weighing up to 40 kg/m², the usual procedure is sufficient. However, if heavier natural stones are used that weigh more than 40 kg/m², additional stabilization is required. In this case, solid stainless steel metal rails should be installed and anchored every 3 meters. These rails reduce the overall weight load by distributing the load evenly and providing additional stability.

  8. Plan expansion jointsDon't forget to plan expansion joints every 5-6 meters to accommodate possible movements of the facade.
